Our mission is to facilitate positive character and education development for talented Philadelphia area youth tennis players, in order to maximize each child's full potential on and off the court and cultivate the next generation of leadership.
Our outreach programs include a year-round tennis and character development program in partnership with the People for People Charter School and three summer camp programs in partnership with Salvation Army, Horizons at Episcopal Academy and ESF Dream Camp. Overall, we serve over 470 underprivileged children throughout the Philadelphia area.
Our Junior Ambassador program reaches over 25 junior players from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We provide each player with clothing, tennis equipment and financial support for training and tournament travel.
Greetings from Down the Line and Beyond! We had a busy and rewarding summer and want to keep you informed about what we are doing and the many opportunities we have for serving Philadelphia’s inner city children. Our outreach programs this past summer were very successful serving over 500 kids at Poplar Park, Gesu School, Girard College, Clemente Park and the Salvation Army.
All our outreach programs serve predominantly low-income, African American youngsters who have very little access to organized sports. These programs have simple but potentially transformational goals: to get kids exercising vigorously, to teach them the game of tennis, and, most importantly, to help them develop the positive attitudes and behaviors, such as good sportsmanship, self-discipline, integrity, and respect for others, that will benefit them throughout their lives. For some of our kids, tennis proves to be an important avenue for success and growth in self-esteem. Others learn a focus and a discipline that help them with their studies. Consistently, their teachers report that our program has improved students’ attendance and behavior in the classroom.
This Fall, DTLB will continue its after-school programs with The People for People Charter School in North Philadelphia and at Poplar Park, located in North Central Philadelphia, and we are starting after school programs at Clemente Park and The Gesu School. Recently, we have been asked to expand our program with the Salvation Army from one location to all six Salvation Army locations in Philadelphia. This is an important opportunity that would allow us to serve an additional 200 children this school year. Our commitment to this expansion will require additional funding which is being sought. Also, several other schools have requested DTLB programs starting in January 2016. Again, these are opportunities will require additional support.
Save the date for our upcoming Spring Gala at Overbrook Country Club on April 15, 2016.
